To showcase Tré Seals' design work and type foundry, Vocal Type, at the Young Guns Awards, I created a 30-second sizzle reel of his work to be shown at the ceremony.
In addition to providing snapshots of his work more broadly, we also wanted to contextualize Vocal Type's work as a foundry that draws upon historical references rooted in political and social movement work by advocates like Martin Luther King Jr. and Eva Perón—specifically the print collateral that emerged from those movements in the form of protest signage, educational fliers, and similar ephemera, which serve as the basis for the design of his typefaces.

			New Editions is a personal project undertaken in Winter 2026 as a way to engage myself creatively outside of client work. The project has also served as an opportunity to explore typefaces I'd kept on the backburner — ones I'd noted as interesting but had not yet had the right professional context to use. I gave myself a day for each cover.
			This project is ongoing.

	<img width="1942" height="2583" width_o="1942" height_o="2583" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3d9fd4759e0284d7411d3ddfd91d8dc752fb712e9f9f34d889835b7f0b484261/closeup_how_should_a_person_be.png" data-mid="246334986" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3d9fd4759e0284d7411d3ddfd91d8dc752fb712e9f9f34d889835b7f0b484261/closeup_how_should_a_person_be.png" />

			How Should a Person Be? explores the identity crisis of its protagonist, Sheila — consumed by confusion about what defines her, and what qualities constitute that of a person worth embodying. Sheila uses her relationships to carve out the edges of her own form, constantly measuring herself against others.
			I sourced a vintage photograph, cropping out the faces and mirror reflection to suggest the blank canvas Sheila sees identity as. The red connotes urgency, set against green — evoking the contrast with others through which she attempts to define herself.
			The millennial setting called for a modern feel: a minimalist layout with two contrasting contemporary typefaces. Cooper Hewitt (Open Sans) is a slightly rounded sans-serif with fairly uniform strokes, open and friendly against the ornate, angular extremes of thicks and thins in Weird Serif (Off Type) — which almost feels like a caricature of a classic, polished serif, resonating with Sheila's tendency to parody the people in her life.

	<img width="1942" height="2550" width_o="1942" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f77e540972ce8574761333931af18b9c392e4dc34162e3ea61ce416b74031f44/closeup_men_explain.png" data-mid="246349402" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f77e540972ce8574761333931af18b9c392e4dc34162e3ea61ce416b74031f44/closeup_men_explain.png" />

			Men Explain Things To Me explores the silencing of women through the over-vocalization of men — from something as innocuous as a scholar explaining Solnit's own ideas back to her, unaware she was the author, to the ways the same mechanism underlies the dismissal of women's testimony, domestic abuse, and their systemic erasure from public life.
			I chose GT Plantar (Grilli Type), a superfamily including italics and "ritalics" extending at increasingly extreme angles — stacked to evoke the repetitive explanations Solnit describes, creating a push/pull motion representing the power of men's words to mold narratives. The first and last lines are upright, with "Men" and "Me" highlighted at opposite ends of the page: their mirroring suggests that both the presence of men and Solnit's sense of self as a woman are irrevocable facts, with everything in between up for debate. The yellow background evokes a highlighter — Solnit using one small, personal interaction (with the aforementioned scholar) as an entrypoint to a universal experience.

	<img width="1942" height="2550" width_o="1942" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dc15c47e30492542703a8383821a4f22105eca9bfed5e2b8c48e905c5e9cc357/closeup_beautiful_world.png" data-mid="246334984" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/dc15c47e30492542703a8383821a4f22105eca9bfed5e2b8c48e905c5e9cc357/closeup_beautiful_world.png" />

			Beautiful World, Where Are You? explores the relationships of four millennials in Ireland, present day. Underlying the ups and downs of their relationships is a quiet but urgent hope for meaning and connection, which they understand is the only thing worth living for in a world that seems to be falling apart. One of the characters at one point wonders if they are in the "last lighted room, before the world goes dark."
			I created an illustration that picks up on that line, lending urgency to the title — as if it's a question that keeps one up at night. Since the illustration is somewhat somber in its portrayal of the world as enveloped in darkness, a tone which contrasts with the characters, who are more dreamers than brooding, I chose Scotch Display (Neil Summerour, Adobe Fonts) to counteract that. Its curled serifs feel romantic — their curves reminiscent of the motion of someone twirling their hair as they wonder, “beautiful world, where are you?”

	<img width="1942" height="2550" width_o="1942" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2232c6a03a3b74f27d0792cc9f9fe16370ba85a8a3ec4062cf778412ad0b1c64/closeup_the_idiot.png" data-mid="246334988" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2232c6a03a3b74f27d0792cc9f9fe16370ba85a8a3ec4062cf778412ad0b1c64/closeup_the_idiot.png" />

			The Idiot explores the inner workings of Selin Karadağ, a first-generation Turkish-American freshman at Harvard studying linguistics. As she struggles to make sense of Russian, she begins a confusing relationship with her Russian classmate, largely via email. Her bewilderment over the mechanics of the language mirrors her bewilderment about him, becoming the catalyst for a period of self-exploration marked by a certain unresolved plotlessness — one event leads to another, seemingly without much meaning.
			The format of a word search nods to the navigation of linguistics. The notion of "the idiot" is conveyed through mistakes etched in pen. The background is a photograph of a horizon line — travel is a recurring theme in the book, representing both the broadening of one's understanding of the world and a growing existential disorientation in the face of cultural differences. I chose a monospaced typeface — Zeitung Mono (Underware) — as a reference to Selin's email correspondence, which takes place in the mid-nineties, when email was brand new.

	<img width="1942" height="2550" width_o="1942" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a80ddeaa8089af077dba391d88d0c494320b25567cd5d202b81e659f0c60639d/closeup_when_you_are_engulfed.png" data-mid="246334989" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a80ddeaa8089af077dba391d88d0c494320b25567cd5d202b81e659f0c60639d/closeup_when_you_are_engulfed.png" />

			When You Are Engulfed in Flames is a collection of essays by David Sedaris. The book takes its title from his essay on quitting smoking, which he decides necessitates a move to Japan — where, in his signature comedic voice, he finds the utterly ridiculous in the mundane.
			I wanted to illustrate the idea of being engulfed in flames without a literal illustration of fire, instead using negative space to convey a swath of orange overtaking Edward Hopper's clown in his painting, Soir Bleu. The image of a clown with a cigarette, caught in an unremarkable moment at a café, felt like the perfect encapsulation of Sedaris' unmistakably absurd humor. In keeping with Sedaris' status as a literary icon, I chose classic serif typefaces — Editorial (Pangram Pangram) and Caslon — to lend the design a sense of timeless literary weight.

	<img width="1942" height="2550" width_o="1942" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/12b3c50dba0373b6386c3f93147ef4a65503dddc17260a5eb587e1e22eb3b3f5/closeup_health_and_safety.png" data-mid="246334985" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/12b3c50dba0373b6386c3f93147ef4a65503dddc17260a5eb587e1e22eb3b3f5/closeup_health_and_safety.png" />

			Health and Safety tells the real-life story of journalist Emily Witt's dive into the world of raves in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Spanning 2016 to 2021, she paints vivid pictures of her experiences at warehouses, clubs, and other makeshift venues: the throb of the music, the strobe of the lights, and the sensations in her body.
			I wanted to capture the hard edge of techno music, so I chose a stark layout with a lot of sharp geometry and VTC Spike (Vocal Type) — a typeface made entirely of angular strokes. The disco ball and dilated pupil point to the book's subject matter, anchored by a neon green that nods to the lights of the raves she attended while also situating the composition in a synthetic space — evoking the heightened, vividly unreal quality of the experiences she was engaging in at hours most people were asleep, or even on their way to work.

	SHOUT (Supportive Housing Organized and United Tenants) is a tenant union in New York City serving tenants and applicants of New York's Supportive Housing system — which offers permanent housing to vulnerable New Yorkers such as those who are or have been unhoused and their families, those with disabilities, those who are transitioning out of institutional settings such as rehabilitation facilities, the carceral system, or are aging out of foster care.
The organization was looking to redesign their website, a task which dovetailed into the necessity to create a branding system that would work across their communications platforms — Squarespace and Canva, as well as future projects in development.

	The Case for a Redesign

<img width="825" height="500" width_o="825" height_o="500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9c6f0d5a93f8aa41ae375dac78a25c40025cb78f4e46bc1ca1d2763fa70794c8/SHOUT---Original-Website.gif" data-mid="245092378" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/825/i/9c6f0d5a93f8aa41ae375dac78a25c40025cb78f4e46bc1ca1d2763fa70794c8/SHOUT---Original-Website.gif" />SHOUT's original website

	SHOUT’s existing site felt underdeveloped and flat, lacked visual hierarchy and fell short of ADA accessibility standards, a significant concern for a membership that includes people with disabilities and seniors. Another pain point was that their sole staff organizer was responsible for both maintaining the site and producing all social media content. Without a coherent visual identity or ready-made assets to draw from, each social media post meant starting from scratch with no direction, consuming time better spent organizing.

	The goal was twofold:
︎&nbsp;Create a visually elevated, accessible web and social media presence that lends legitimacy to SHOUT's work and reflects their spirited identity as an organization
︎ Establish a cohesive, dynamic, and flexible branding system for their organizer to use across Squarespace and Canva, as well as support forthcoming legislative print materials, and other projects of varying complexity in development

Some of SHOUT's original social media posts

	Type Styles
To counter the flat, static look of the website, I selected three typefaces to create dynamic contrast. Since some of their posts were quite lengthy, it also felt important to give them three typefaces so they could distinguish content through more than just sizing — saving space and avoiding the need to shrink text too small — again, a concern for their membership which included seniors and folks with disabilities.
All typefaces are available on both Squarespace and Canva, and free for future print needs. Since Squarespace only allows two fonts (headings and body copy), Sanchez serves as an accent font in that context, used for buttons and captions.

	<img width="1500" height="1080" width_o="1500" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1b43c1db433073c3eb52efc92cc645a4bc583bc49608494880edc5a692a3d074/Typefaces.gif" data-mid="245363621" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1b43c1db433073c3eb52efc92cc645a4bc583bc49608494880edc5a692a3d074/Typefaces.gif" />

	Icon SetOne obstacle that created both a time burden and a lack of cohesion in SHOUT's social media content was a shortage of graphic assets to create dyanmic compositions. Their organizer was defaulting to assembling social media posts with random color blocking and shapes, and photography of inconsistent quality from various members’ phones. Similarly, the original website had little to work with beyond text. Developing a custom icon set centered on the key themes of SHOUT's work built a visual narrative that could be iterated upon, and filled the void of reliable graphics that could be called upon to create compelling, cohesive compositions.
	<img width="1500" height="1080" width_o="1500" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dd9f9aa86300a29f147b084ed74f69a6134401afd4679d3e653be390282821bf/Icons.gif" data-mid="245365142" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/dd9f9aa86300a29f147b084ed74f69a6134401afd4679d3e653be390282821bf/Icons.gif" />

	A New York Palette
SHOUT’s logo had already been developed using black text with an orange accent, which they wanted to retain, in addition to exploring a blue they’d used on occassion. Nonetheless, I wanted to make sure we built a narrative through the palette so the exact tones were revisited and the palette extended to give us the opportunity to use the 6 icons as a set with minimal color repetition. Inspired by a day in the life of a New Yorker, the extended palette would also lend typographic and graphic compositions depth and variety, rather than staying within one family of tones the way the website had — which we’d already seen fell flat and lacked dynamic contrast.

	Because of a concern around accessibility for senior and disabled members a secondary,&nbsp;supporting palette was also developed to serve as backgrounds and accents as needed — offering contrast to the primary palette ensuring legibility and flexibility when working with multiple colors.

	<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e2c8b3cebeb7fa96a7c9ee9dd9df3c598c6fd27f9d3077fd5d9f4a283b087298/Hero-Necterine.gif" data-mid="246524689" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e2c8b3cebeb7fa96a7c9ee9dd9df3c598c6fd27f9d3077fd5d9f4a283b087298/Hero-Necterine.gif" />
	Necterine is a dating app for people committed to personal growth — therapy, mindfulness, spirituality. Unlike traditional dating apps that lead with physical attraction or surface-level compatibility, Necterine connects people tired of swipe culture who share a deeper orientation: the ongoing pursuit of self-awareness and enlightened living, and are seeking a partner on the same path.
The branding reflects this warmth and depth. A palette rooted in oranges and yellows is carried through organic, fluid gradients. I developed a logo that builds on that foundation, translating the spirit of the app — two people drawn together not by the superficiality of conventional dating culture, but by a shared desire to find a partner equally committed to personal growth.

<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e7137de3d96f142eeb63173a84c81eb6457aeb77513b6a7a573e6a49ac87317e/necterine_process_01.png" data-mid="246476512" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e7137de3d96f142eeb63173a84c81eb6457aeb77513b6a7a573e6a49ac87317e/necterine_process_01.png" />

	Initial sketches explored the idea of two entities coming together — how form and proximity could suggest connection, intimacy, and mutual presence.

	<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/55868a765aab360c20e9c35550fab4d8186c1642a786afe6dd4e45b370ee0598/necterine_process_02.png" data-mid="246521327" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/55868a765aab360c20e9c35550fab4d8186c1642a786afe6dd4e45b370ee0598/necterine_process_02.png" /><img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="//freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9c7aaf807ed3a212b3cecb5d291485620d21333de525a32b42892ac6c467e21b/necterine_process_02.png" data-mid="246520231" border="0" style="width: 714.122525px; height: 401.69392px; display: none;">
	Further drafts focused on expressing the spark of connection. Two concepts emerged: enlightenment — reflecting the inner work of Necterine's target demographic — and the more visceral pull of attraction, sparks flying. Both pointed toward light, soft edges, and a sense of movement.

	<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8d914d7fc3869e1ddf15143a5b44eb2b390caf508d543ed9deb7457d52eb8299/Process-Orbs.gif" data-mid="246524732" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8d914d7fc3869e1ddf15143a5b44eb2b390caf508d543ed9deb7457d52eb8299/Process-Orbs.gif" />

	The final mark depicts two glowing orbs — one black, one white — representing two counterparts. Each carries its own glow, symbolizing an individual's pursuit of enlightenment and personal growth. Where the two orbs overlap, a third inner glow emerges — representing the relationship that forms when two people, already committed to their own growth, come together around that shared purpose.

	<img width="1920" height="988" width_o="1920" height_o="988" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4472771aab6294e1084d09a9f44e4614feaf15ec403ea6862c3ec9c3807e7c50/necterine_process_03.png" data-mid="246522488" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4472771aab6294e1084d09a9f44e4614feaf15ec403ea6862c3ec9c3807e7c50/necterine_process_03.png" />

	Necterine's competitors — Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble — lean on sans-serif typography that feels youthful. Necterine positioned itself as an alternative, targeting users ready to graduate to something more meaningful, so a serif felt natural. For smaller applications, I developed an abbreviated mark: a lowercase "n" followed by a period. The period reinforces the circular forms in the logo while suggesting finality — like this is the last app users will need.

<img width="1920" height="988" width_o="1920" height_o="988" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3ebec774306426b3463c696a1679d4b7a0237de1095f8a0a0a50f659c78c2014/necterine_process_04.png" data-mid="246524845" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3ebec774306426b3463c696a1679d4b7a0237de1095f8a0a0a50f659c78c2014/necterine_process_04.png" />

	The palette was drawn from the pre-existing branding guidelines, using the darkest orange and a warm black to ensure contrast against various backgrounds.

	The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency provides political risk insurance and credit enhancement to facilitate foreign direct investment in emerging economies. Each year, the agency convenes a conference to present its annual review — documenting the year's work in a print and digital report.I was responsible for typesetting, layout, infographics, and a set of three motion graphics for the report's accompanying social media campaign promoting the conferance.

	The report presents a mix of financial data, statistics, and program narratives, with the accompanying social media campaign offering a snapshot of key insights explored throughout the report, bringing their findings to life through motion.
We wanted to bring analytical information into a space of levity — inspiring optimism and a sense of potential to invite confident financial partnerships with key stakeholders. MIGA's core work is bridging private capital and developing markets by de-risking investments that political uncertainty might otherwise prevent. Working against that notion of risk, and toward a feeling of openness about the future, we chose a playful and contemporary illustration style that infuses the content with lightness, a cool toned, calming palette with some bright accents, and a youthful, friendly, rounded serif typeface.

	In June 2023, amid the legislation of several extreme anti-LGBTQ+ laws across the country, GLAAD launched a campaign for Pride Month featuring a series of 30 posters reading, "You Can't Ban Queer Joy," one for each day of the month.
The posters were made available on GLAAD's website for at-home printing allowing members of the queer community anywhere in the world to post them in their community or bring to Pride events. Additionally, one poster per day was featured on GLAAD's social media channels.&nbsp;The posters were designed to channel joy — but also to feel queer, positioning themselves against the corporate Pride aesthetic that dominates mainstream visual culture. They directly lean into queer cultural references and maximalism — evoking a sense of heightened “volume” to their representation of queerness.

Marsha P. Johnson, one of the most celebrated queer icons of all time, was known for her activism — particularly her role at Stonewall — and her ornate sense of style: crowns crafted from flowers, ribbons, and feathers, cascading pearls, boas, and an embrace of color and lavishness. Historical photographs of Marsha almost always feature her smiling; her image is synonymous with queer joy.
To channel her, I designed a top banner of text resembling a police barricade, nodding to her fearlessness in confronting authority, breaking down barriers, and fighting for her community — juxtaposed with a sinuous, multicolored typeface similar in its contours and colors to the flowers, feathers, ribbons she was known for wearing.

For this piece, I drew upon inspiration from 90s rave posters. Historically, rave culture distinguished itself through its intentional inclusivity, creating spaces where marginalized communities — particularly queer individuals — could gather freely. This ethos extended to the visual language of the movement, which embraced bold aesthetics centered on joy, freedom, and transcendence. Events like "Space" and "Fantazia" promised more than entertainment; they offered portals to alternate realities.
My design sought to capture the spirit of escape, dance, and euphoria. The vibrant blue sky background evokes the sensation of flight, the curves of the script suggest movement, and the iconic smiley face stickers sprinkle the composition with joy.

This poster was an ode to Typefesse, a typeface by Velvetyne Type (Océane Juvin), whose design explores the idea of the human body's ability to shape itself in a variety of ways, synchronizing with the alphabet. Thinking about the outlawing of queer bodies and bodily autonomy, its celebration of the human body in different formations resonated with the theme of queer joy.

This final poster draws inspiration from queer visual culture of the 1970s and 1980s — an era when the community cultivated joy despite facing systemic oppression and the absence of fundamental rights. One archival reference image resonated with me in particular: a photograph of a pink balloon from a 1980s Pride gathering, taken during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, reading “I’m a gay balloon.” Its buoyant presence reads as defiant yet joyful, and became the central visual anchor for the design, while balloons’ prolific presence at Pride parades inspired me to foreground themes of gathering and community.&nbsp;
These historical Pride parade images shaped key design decisions: pink bubble type channels the playful optimism of that Pride balloon, while a photograph of a crowd of people at a queer club serves as the backround, highlighting the theme of togetherness.

	The United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) is a consortium of global operations and groups within the United Nations that promote policy change and development around the world. They pursue a set of 17 interconnected global goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all people by 2030. They cover issues ranging from climate action and clean energy to education, gender equality, and economic growth, and serve as a shared framework for governments, civil society, and international organizations to coordinate and measure progress.
To document their progress, the UN commissioned a report establishing a common base of knowledge across the UN system — spanning member organizations, government, and civil society partners worldwide.

Using the UNSDG's pre-established branding guidelines, I co-designed an intricate 64 page report. I was responsible for developing the typographic system, layouts, overall typesetting, and developing infographics.

Designed with Nadine Werjant under the oversight of Creative Director, Connie Koch, of Ahoy Studios.

	We developed a comprehensive typographic hierarchy to manage the clear conveyance of complex information at scale — spanning table of contents, chapter heads, subsections, infographics, lists, citations, footnotes, photo credits, and body copy — all drawn from the Roboto family as part of the UN's established brand system.Each Sustainable Development Goal is assigned a distinct high-contrast color and icon within the UN's brand system — a visual language we leveraged to untangle complex infographics and bring order and clarity to large volumes of information.

	Photography was drawn from the UN's own library, offering moments of visual space and breath amid the report's typographic density.
Images were chosen for their dynamism and resonance with the UN's core goals. Subjects are shown active and living — working, accessing sustenance and healthcare, communing — lending to a sense of visual momentum to the written content. Selects favored candid images featuring movement over posed photographs or portraits.

					Social Justice Fruit Stickers are a sticker series meant to facilitate protest, reimagining it as a more small scale, daily act supplementing larger scale actions like picketing. Users can covertly stick them on fruits and veggies at the grocery store, or anywhere they feel inspired. The material is durable enough to withstand exposure to moisture and the elements.
					The project was an exploration in small scale design, copywriting, and researching typefaces used in the 1960s-80s, when many fruit sticker designs still used today were developed.
